Burren Centre is located in the historic village of Kilfenora, in County Clare and provides a gateway to the Burren. This fantastic Interpretative Centre provides a great experience, and a great insight into the rich history of the area. You step back in time, where you can discover the flora, fauna, geology, legends, archaeology and natural history of the Burren. Start your journey with a 12 minute film by the renowned Eamon de Buitlear, it provides an overview and covers the story of the formation of the Burren over 320 million years ago, to the unique moon-like landscape that exists today.
The “Walk Through Time’ is a multi-dimensional exhibition that follows the geological formation of the stunning Burren region. The exhibition area is well presented and informative, it gives a comprehensive history of the area. There are many wonderful artefacts and original works of art on display, as well as pictures, diagrams and dioramas. There are many interactive experiences as well as dramatic like-like reproductions of human activity. A lot of reading is involved.
The centre’s latest exhibition is the Kilfenora Ceili Band Parlour, it follows and brings the music and history of this renowned traditional band to life both visually and aurally, visitors are taken on an enchanting musical journey.
Also located nearby are church ruins and fine examples of limestone Irish crosses. The combination of the various exhibits offer an insight into the rich history and heritage of the Burren, and proves very useful when exploring this region, it allows you to appreciate the unique attributes of the area.
Take time to enjoy the cosy tea-rooms where you can taste some delicious traditional and local cuisine. There is also a lovely spacious gift shop that has a nice selection of creative and unique gifts and souvenirs.
