Portsalon Golf Club is located at the end of the Fanad Peninsula, in County Donegal, it enjoys a secluded and scenic position. The original course commenced play in 1891, over the years numerous changes and improvements have been made with the last significant alterations occurring in 2000 under the instruction of Pat Ruddy, the course has pretty much stayed the same since then. This 18-hole championship links course is a 72 and measures 6,284 from the yellow tees. The club was one of the founder members of the Golfing Union of Ireland, the oldest golfing union in the world.This pretty links course has made the most out of its natural landscape resulting in a course that weaves carefully through the sand dunes. There is a nice selection of holes, both entertaining and challenging. Being exposed to the elements wind can be a big factor here, it can be your friend or your foe depending on how it blows. What is different here is that the first nine holes are more difficult than the final nine, so after a tough start the pressure eases, to great relief. This uniquely old-fashioned course provides challenges to all level of golfer and will not disappoint.The course is well kept, the undulating rumpled fairways are narrow and lined by dunes, the contoured greens are quick and true, watch out the holes are lined by sand dunes and the clinging rough is thick and unforgiving, and then there is the hidden swale.What you will find here is a course that sits in an unspoilt and uncrowded area with some amazing views, the spectacular Knockalla Mountains provide an impressive backdrop. It is often referred to as “the links of heaven” and it is not difficult to see why, the sheer rural quality of the landscape enhances this course.
