Druids Glen is one of two excellent courses at the Druids Glen Resort, located in County Wicklow. The course dates to 1995 and was designed by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock, it is often referred to as the Augusta of Europe, a truly magnificent inland course.
It is a unique 18 hole parkland championship course. This par 71 course measures 6,202 yards from the tees, so is a relatively short course. It is a modern classic style course, with tree lined fairways, historical landmarks, spectacular water features and colourful floral displays, probably the most colourful course in the country. It is a pleasant tree lined course with breathtaking scenery and seems more mature than it is. It appears to sit naturally into the surrounding countryside as it meanders through. The course has a spectacular layout and offers a unique but also great game of golf that will challenge all level of player.
Every hole represents a different challenge, and a distinct Irish flavour, a number of the the holes are very scenic. There are no weak holes on this course, just a solid collection of holes, if you are not on top of your game it could all go awry. Keeping your ball in play is the real challenge so make sure to take along plenty of balls, they could well be needed. The course makes the most of of its existing rugged and varied landscape, with the natural terrain providing many of the hazards.
It is an undulating and well-wooded parkland course, that is
- liberally dispersed water hazards,
- many featuring around holes, bunkers and tree-lined holes.
- It is a course that demands accuracy with many approach shots over water, blind tee shots,
- also the length may be an issue for some golfers, they may find the holes to be a bit close together.
The course is extraordinarily well-kept, it is immaculate. The large undulating greens are consistent, smooth and fast, with a lot of tricky breaks, the fairways are quite wide but do hold a lot of hazards, the rough is not too long. When you play here, you are playing one of the finest, most challenging and most enjoyable golf courses in Europe. It is possible to score well here if you stay on top of your game but, regardless it will be a course that remains etched on your memory for a long time.
