The County Sligo Golf Club or Rosses Point as it is sometimes referred to, is considered to be one of the great championship links courses. It is positioned in the picturesque seaside village of Rosses Point just 8km from Sligo and known locally as “The Point”.
County Sligo Golf Club originally founded in 1894 it started as a 9 Hole course, designed by George Combe. It is now a modern 27 hole complex with spacious clubhouse and modern facilities. The 18 hole championship course is a par 71 measuring 6,818 yards from the championship tees, it is a long treacherous course. It enjoys a stunning clifftop location, three beaches below keep the Atlantic Ocean at bay. It’s elevated position certainly adds some spectacular panoramic views. The Benbulben mountain overlook the course and provide a dramatic backdrop. Don’t let the breathtaking scenery distract you but, do take the time to enjoy it. A mature and dignified course that is one of Ireland’s great championship links, it is a quintessential links course, with a traditional layout.
A main feature of this course are the level and elevations, you will find:
- the undulations to be dramatic and on occasions unforgiving,
- tees are elevated and the greens are raised plateaus.
- Nowhere else will you get such individuality of holes, there is not a weak hole on the course.
- There are some lovely natural holes,
- a number of water features,
- plenty of sand
- and some blind spots to contend with.
You will find lots of wide and flat paths through the dunes. The prevailing breeze from the Atlantic also needs to be factored into play, it can range from gentle to fierce, during the course of a game but this is all part of the charm of playing a links.
The course enjoys an interesting layout and can be divided into three areas that are distinctly different. It is in great condition, the fairways are generously wide and the greens are true and fast. The opening holes may give you a sense of security but don’t be taken in, the course gets progressively harder from there on.
Many are of the opinion that County Sligo offers the finest 18 holes in the country, after playing here you will probably agree with them. It is certainly a fabulous course that is pleasurable to play whilst still being challenging, you could say it is tough but fair.
