North West of Ireland
Perhaps Ireland’s most underrated region for golf, the Emerald Isle’s dramatic northwest coast is home to numerous hidden gems that stand up with the country’s best.
While many visitors to the Northwest will have heard of such courses as Ballyliffin Golf Club following the very successful 2018 DDF Irish Open & Co Sligo (Rosses Point) Golf Club with many Irish Champions playing the West of Ireland previously including winners Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry & Pádriag Harrington. The new Wild Atlantic Dunes at Carne Golf Links has emerged a favorite amongst all golfers to the west coast of Ireland with tees and greens nestled among the dramatic sand-covered dunes that resemble the lunar landscape.
Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design, has fashioned 18 unforgettable holes over sprawling links land that is destined to become a modern great. It sits on the most magnificent piece of links land – huge scale, west coast of Ireland scenery, with enough variety in dimension to present a real diversity of golf holes. Take the opportunity to play Rosapenna, St Patrick’s Links & play the ranked #55 in the GOLF Magazine Top 100.
Set on a breathtaking strip of land on the Donegal coast in the north-west of the country. World-renowned design team of Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner have lovingly re-established Narin & Portnoo as one of Ireland’s must-play links.
You also must include Enniscrone Golf Club and also Donegal (Murvagh) GC which draws comparisons to Muirfield for its distinctive layout that runs in two large loops. For planning purposes, include excursions to Galway City, Sliabh Liag (Slieve League), The Reel Inn & Doe Castle to relax after an unforgettable day on the links.

West of Ireland
Boasting rugged coastlines and beautiful environs, the ‘wild atlantic way’ offers historic courses that will delight any visitor.
Visit the famous Westport GC, sitting on the shores of Lough Crew in the shadow of the awe-inspiring Croach Patrick mountain. Designed by renowned golf architect, Fred Hawtree, the club has hosted multiple Irish PGA championships. Located a 5-minute drive from Westport town, the course is set in the scenic splendour of 260 acres of undulating parklands on the shores of Clew Bay with breath-taking views of Croagh Patrick.
Enjoy the Enniscrone Golf Club which 2019 Open Championship winner Shane Lowry describes as “the best course in Ireland off the beaten track”. Boasting 27 holes on 400 acres of magnificent links land, the course has been voted as the “Best in Connacht” by Golfers Guide to Ireland and regularly features among Irelands most acclaimed courses.
Strandhill Golf Club is a beautiful 18 hole links golf course boasting stunning views of the surrounding countryside and ocean with Knocknarea mountain providing the back drop. Donegal Golf Club is situated on the Murvagh Peninsula enclosed on one side by the great Atlantic Ocean and by Donegal Bay on the other. Originally designed by Eddie Hackett, a legend of Irish golf course architecture, the course makes the most out of the natural terrain to establish a tough links course that will challenge the best of players.
Travel along the remote and rugged Mullet Peninsula to visit Carne Golf Links which boasts two courses: the original Hackett 18, and the newer Wild Atlantic Dunes 18. The Co Sligo (Rosses Point) Golf Club is positioned in the picturesque seaside village of Rosses Point just 8km from Sligo and known locally as “The Point”.
For many of the above courses, the prevailing wind from the Atlantic needs to be factored into play, as it can range from gentle to fierce over the course of a single game. Finally, make time for excursions to Westport House & Gardens, The National Museum of Ireland, Carrowholly Stables & Trekking Centre and Ashford Castle to experience the best of what the emerald isle has to offer.
