It is situated on an old manor estate in East Cork, the luxury Castlemartyr Golf Resort is an 18 hole, Par 72, inland links style course, that opened in 2009.
It is the creation of renowned golf course designer Ron Kirby. In Castlemartyr Mr. Kirby has created a modern inland links style course that establishes a visually pleasing yet testing experience. The design of the course was to be both challenging and pleasurable for golfers of any standard and he has achieved this without a doubt.
Castlemartyr is an interesting inland links course, it has a great layout and a good variety of tee positions and each hole has its own character. The course has made the most of the grounds of the old manor and its 220 acres of landscaped woodlands and lakes, as well as an ancient chapel and graveyard, there is a small creek that runs through part of the course. The course is beautifully maintained and features of the course include
- undulating curves,
- lush well-kept fairways and greens, that are laid out in two loops of nine
- and well placed bunkers.
- The bunkers are hidden and some are cavernous or tricky so be aware,
- the fairways are reasonably wide so it is possible to score well without much difficulty.
The course can be tricky on some occasions and as a player it will be necessary to keep your eye on the ball.
There are excellent facilities here including a practice chipping area and putting green, together, with several practice nets.
Castlemartyr is certainly one of the best golf courses in the south of Ireland, and is definitely one of the most exceptional golf resorts on the island of Ireland. The inland links feel that the course provides is unique. Added to the fact that you will play a round of golf on lands that are steeped in history makes this course extremely special.
