Malone Golf Club is situated in Dunmurray in County Antrim, it is an old club originally founded back in 1895, the club has moved on four separate occasions to its current location. It sits in stunning surroundings amongst 330 acres of secluded undulating wooded parkland, a centre piece of the course is the beautiful Ballydrain Lake that sits prominently here. The original course was designed by C.K Cotton in 1962. The course here at Malone is unique in that it comprises of three loops of nine holes, referred to as Drumbridge, Ballydrain and Edenderry. There is an order in which the holes are generally played, the Drumbridge usually forms the first nine and Ballydrain the back nine, making up the championship course. The true test here is Edenderry, it is the hilliest course, with a couple of sharp doglegs, it provides the most challenges both in skill and energy. Each of these courses have there own charm, appeal and challenges. This parkland course is a par 71, measuring 6,704 yards from the back tees. The idea here is that you can customise your course to suit your personal preferences and abilities. It is a scenic but challenging course, mature trees provide definition to many of the holes, the Black Mountains and Antrim Plateau provide a dramatic backdrop here amongst the open countryside. The lake comes into play on the back nine. The course meanders through this fabulous parkland estate. Features here include, flowering shrubs, tree lined fairways and a large lake. There are a number of interesting par four holes here, some measure over 400 yards. There is a really nice choice of holes, all interesting and varied without a weak hole here. This course demands accuracy, the mature trees are just waiting to impede a stray shot. Although challenging it is fair and does reward good play, it has a nice balance. The course is nicely maintained, the greens are excellent, true and consistent, the undulating fairways are tree-lined, several holes have dramatic elevation changes, blind shots and solid bunkering around the fairways and greens are what you have to contend with here. With the three nine holes it is a course that offers diversity and interest, in a beautiful, tranquil and serene setting, you would never know you are close to the city centre. It is truly a hidden gem from its stunning surroundings to its excellent layout, an inspiring and pleasurable course to play.
